    M.Tech Admissions - 2010- Guidelines/Suggestion
    Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE)

NOTE: The following guidelines for M.Tech admissions have been prepared by us considering the information given by previous students based on their score & Rank .

Suggested order of preferences for M.Tech specialization:
    Communication Systems.
    VLSI / Micro Electronics.
    Digital Electronics
    Systems & Signals
    Computer Science, if interested .
    Instrumentation & Controls
Interdisciplinary courses like Satellite Technology, Internet Science, Aerospace, Management, Industrial Engineering ( NITIE – Bombay)
    * The selection will be generally based on the Percentile/Rank/Score obtained in GATE.
    * In open category the possibility to get the above specializations based on the ranks, will be generally as follows.
    * Rank Below - 200 : Communication Systems, VLSI / Micro Electronics in IITs.
    * Rank between 200 - 300 : Communication Systems, VLSI / Micro Electronics...
    (With interview in IITs).
    * Rank between 300 - 600 : The remaining specializations (S.No. 3 to 6) in IITs and all the above specializations in NIT's and Other premier Colleges like BHU, ANNA University College etc., (with interview and written test).
    * Rank between 600 - 1000 : Other Universities like JNTU, Osmania etc.
    (With written and Interview).
    * Rank more than - 1000 : Private Colleges with Direct admission or with Interview.
For interdisciplinary courses percentile will be the main criteria
    * The students are advised to apply for more number of Colleges so that they can get
admission in the desired specialization in atleast one or two Colleges. Then the students
can decide to join the appropriate College.
Premier Institutes, in the order of preference :
    IISc, Bangalore
    IIT, Bombay / Kanpur / Madras / Delhi / Kharagpur / Roorkee / Gowhati
    IIIT, Hyderabad ( www.iiit.ac.in/pgadmin.html)
    NITIE , Bombay (Management Course)
    NITs : Warangal / Suratkal / Tirichy / Calicut etc…..
BHU, Pondicherry university, BITs, Pilani, Anna University, PSG, Coimbatore, Anna University,Rurkela etc…
    Other University Colleges……
    Selection Criteria:
The selection is, generally based on GATE rank /score. However, some IITs, NITs and other university colleges may conduct a written test / Interview for selection into M.Tech. In such a case, the GATE score is given 70% weightage and remaining 30% weightage is for the written test / Interview. The exact procedure will be known by referring to the information brochure issued by the colleges for admission into M.Tech. The selection criteria may vary from year to year and from college to college.
    * In IISc Bangalore, IIT Madras, Kharagpur,Roorkee, the selection is purely based on GATE score.
    * In other colleges apart from GATE score, a written test or interview is being conducted
for selection into M.Tech. If a student possess excellent rank in the GATE, then direct admission will also be given without any interview.
    Stipend for M.Tech :
The stipend/Scholarship is available for eligible candidates in the form of Teaching assistance ship or Research assistance ship etc. The teaching assistance ship may be preferred, if possible.
    Non Stipend M.Tech:
Most of the IITs, NITs & other colleges have certain seats reserved in the Non-stipend category. Here, the UGC scholarship will not be given. All the expenses shall be borne by the students only. Those students who are economically sound and desperate to join IITs, can apply . Students, even with low GATE score can get good specializations.
    MS Programme:
Offered by most of the IITs and IISc. The MS course is equivalent to M.Tech. It involves research work and takes about 21/2 to 3yrs to complete the course. Very few seats are available in the IITs. Admissions are given twice in a year (in June & Nov. months). Admissions are based on GATE score + Degree marks + interview. Candidates with reasonably good GATE score and good academic record (> 70% marks) have chances of getting admission in IITs. UGC scholarship will be given throughout the program. Students who can’t get MTech admission in IITs, generally try for MS Course in IITs
Special attention for SC/ST students :
We strongly suggest you to apply for premier institutes like IIT’s irrespective of your percentiles. Luck may favour you.
    Special attention for Girls:
Certain universities have girls reservation, eg. Andhra Pradesh. Hence even at lower percentiles compared to boys, girls have fair chances.
Special note for Second Class students:
If you see the rules & regulations of various premier Institutes, 1st class in Engineering is the pre-requisite. If you apply online, your application will be rejected. Hence we suggest you to apply manually with a request letter stating your present strengths substantiating with GATE Score and your desire to do M.Tech in the respective IIT. Request them to give you a chance so that you can prove yourself. Most of the professors would like to encourage the students who are seriously interested, inspite of the above –ve point, if the GATE score is good and the student has a burning desire to join the desired specialization in the desired IIT. They may consider your application with sympathy and may give you a chance after a personnel Interview. some of our old students with second class in their graduation got admission on similar grounds. Be bold and be positive. Definitely, you can reach your goal.
    Note:
1.The students are advised to select the first preference carefully, appropriate to their GATE score level as the students are called for interview based on their 1st preference opted, generally
2.Those who have got relatively low scores in the GATE are strongly advised to apply for more number of colleges (not less than 10) so that they can get admission in at least one college in the desired specialization
3.The students shall be in-touch with the daily English newspapers ( The Hindu, The Indian Express, The Times of India etc.) and Employment News for the M.Tech notifications by various colleges.
4.All the above guidelines are only suggestive / advisory. The candidates are requested to go through the information brochure of each college and take decision appropriately. Depending upon their interest.
5.The students may also contact their seniors/friends studying in various colleges for their suggestions and latest information about the colleges.

Premier Institutes, in the order of preference
    IISc, Bangalore
    IIT, Bombay / Madras / Kanpur / Delhi / Kharagpur / Roorkee / Gowhati
IIIT, Hyderbad ( www.iiit.ac.in/pgadmin.html) ( Computer Aided Structural Engineering )
    NITs : Suratkal / Tirichy /Warangal / Calicut / Nagpur/ Durgapur/ Rourkela etc…..
BHU, PSG, Coimbatore; Anna University, BITs, Pilani; Pune university, CIT, Coimbatore.
Other University Colleges viz. SVU, Tirupathi; OU, Hyderabad ,JNTU, Hyderabad, Ananthapur; JNTU Kakinada;; AU, Vizag; Annamalai University; Visweswara Institute, Banglore; Mysore University, Gulberga University, etc…
    7. Private Colleges viz. CBIT, Hyderabad – Structures
    Siddartha, Vijayawada – Structures
    etc……
    Selection Criteria for M.Tech:
The selection is, generally, based on GATE Rank/Percentile/Score. However, some IITs, NITs and other colleges may additionally conduct a written test / Interview. In such a case, the GATE rank is given 70% weightage and remaining 30% weightage is for the written test / Interview. The exact procedure will be known by referring to the information brochure issued by the colleges for admission into M.Tech each year. The selection criteria may vary from year to year and from college to college. It also depends on the branch /specialization opted.
    * The previous cut-off ranks/percentiles are sometimes kept in the web sites of some IITs. The notification for M.Tech admissions will be released separately by IISc, each IIT and other Universities in the leading News Papers. The notification will also be made available in the respective college web site. The students are requested to visit the web site of each IIT for all details. The students can apply for various specializations by mentioning the order of preferences. Depending upon the merit, appropriate specialization will be offered.

    NOTE:
    * The students are advised to select the first preference carefully, appropriate to their GATE rank as the students are called for interview based on their 1st preference opted and on the merit order. For example, if a 90percentile candidate applies for Structures specialization as the first option in IITs, then there is a danger that the candidate may not be called for interview. The same percentile can be called for interview, if the first preference is Water Resource Engg or Earth quake Engg or CADD etc.. depending upon the rank of the candidate and IITopted. In every specialization, only some number of candidates will be called for interview based on the merit order.
    Suggestions:
    1. To secure admission in IISc Bangalore, the rank shall be within top 40, generally.
    2. If a student gets more than 98 percentile, there is a definite chance of getting admission in IITs. The students can put their dream Specialization as the first choice in the order of preferences.
    3. If it is between 94 and 98 percentile, the students can try for those IITs where there is written test/interview for selection. The students have fair chance of getting admission in IITs if interview performance is good. It is advisable not to opt Structures as the first preference in the top IITs. However, if the student is from a reputed college or if he/she has good academic record then the student can opt structures as the first choice. The students are also advised to apply for MS programmes in IITs and for NITs keeping Structures as the first choice.
    4. If it is between 89 and 94 percentile, the students can try in IITs like Roorkee, Guwhati etc. but the first choice should be opted carefully. It is advisable to opt specializations like Water resources, Earthquake engineering, Architecture, Computer aided design, etc., as the first choice. They have to also apply the NITs and MS programme in IITs, and other reputed university colleges.
    5. If it is below 89 percentile, they are advised to apply for NITs, university colleges and private colleges depending upon the merit level..
    * AMIE candidates can get admissions based on their GATE rank in IIT, Madras, Kharagpur & Roorkee. Whereas in other IITs they require to possess some additional professional experience and other qualifications.
    Stipend for M.Tech :
Stipend/Scholarship of Rs. 8,000/- is available for GATE- qualified candidates (with more than the cut-off marks) in the form of Teaching assistance ship or Research assistance ship etc. The teaching assistance ship may be preferred, if possible.
    NITIE (Bombay):
It offers 2 years PG Diploma in Industrial Engineering. It is a management course equivalent to MBA. It has good campus placements. All the students who have more than 85 percentile are eligible to apply. The admission is purely based on marks secured in the Group Discussion & Interview to be conducted by it later.Strongly recommended to join. Excellent salary packages and campus placements.
    IISC, Banglore:
Here the M.Tech specializations available for Civil students are Aerospace, Satellite Technology, Structures, Geotechnical, Water Resource Engg. The admission for M.Tech is normally based on GATE Rank/percentiles. The top rankers generally opt Structural Engg. or Satellite Technology or Aerospace Engg. depending upon their choice. For these three specializations, the cut-off rank is about 15.
After the above three specializations, the other courses preferred are Geotechnical Engg. & Water Resource Engg. in the order. Generally ranks upto 40 can fetch these specilisations..
For MS course in IISc, the students shall appear for a separate written test (on the Civil Engg. Syllabus) followed by an interview. The number of seats for MS is quite less compared to M.Tech.
IITs Bombay, Kanpur, Delhi & Gowhati:
Admission for M.Tech is based on GATE rank/Percentile and the interview conducted by the respective IIT. For Structures in IIT, Bombay and Gowhati, there will be a written test and followed by an interview. For other specializations, only interview is conducted. The interview questions are concentrated mainly on the 1st preference opted for. However, questions from Mathematics etc can also be asked.
If a student possess excellent rank in the GATE, then direct admission will also be given without any interview.
    IIT, Madras, Roorkee & Kharagpur:
Generally admissions are given on the basis of GATE rank/Percentile.
    IIIT, Hyderabad:
This Institute has good placements. Computer aided Structural Engineering and Building Science, are the two specializations available for Civil Engg. students. The Computer Aided Structural Engineering can be preferred. Stipend will be given for M.Tech, in the second year only. The selection is purely based on the performance in a separate written test to be conducted by it all over the Country and interview.

    NITs & Other Universities:
Some of these colleges give admissions based on the GATE rank and other colleges conduct an interview also.
Computer Science: Civil Engg. students can seek admission in M.Tech Computer Science in REC, Warangal, Anna University(Chennai), Central University( Hyderabad), Osmania University( Hyderabad) etc. Selection is based on the performance in the written test conducted separately by the respective University.
Non Stipend M.Tech or Self Financed M.Tech:
Most of the IITs, NITs & other colleges have certain seats reserved in the Non-stipend category. Here, the UGC scholarship will not be given. All the expenses shall be borne by the students only. Those students who are economically sound and desperate to join IITs, can apply for Non-stipend or Self financed MTech in IITs. The Students who have low GATE percentile can get good specializations.

    Other University Colleges:
SVU, Tirupathi; JNTU, Hyderabad, JNTU, Ananthapur; JNTU Kakinada; OU, Hyderabad; AU, Vizag, Annamalai University, Visweswara Institute, Banglore, Mysore University, Gulberga University, etc.., In these Colleges admissions are given based on GATE rank/percentile. The students who have less GATE ranks can apply these colleges.
    Private Colleges:
    CBIT, Hyderabad – Structures
    Siddartha, Vijayawada – Structures
    etc….
These colleges are now offering M.Tech programs. But stipend will be given only to some GATE qualified students. The students with relatively very less GATE rank can apply to these colleges.
    MS Programme in IITs:
Offered by most of the IITs and IISc. The MS course is equivalent to M.Tech. It involves research work and takes about 2 to 3 years to complete the course. Very few seats are available in the IITs/ IISc. Admissions are given twice in a year (in June & Nov. months). Admission are based on GATE score + Degree marks + interview. Candidates with more than 90 percentile and good academic record (> 70% marks) have chances of getting admission in MS course. UGC scholarship will be given throughout the program.
Special attention for SC/ST students: We strongly suggest you to apply for premier institutes like IIT’s irrespective of your ranks. Luck may favor you.
Special attention for Girls: Certain universities have girls reservation, eg. Andhra Pradesh. Hence even at lower percentiles compared to boys, girls have fair chances.
Special note for Second Class students:
If you see the rules & regulations of various premier Institutes, 1st class in Engineering is the pre-requisite to apply for M.Tecch. If you apply online, your application will be rejected. Hence we suggest you to apply manually with a request letter stating your present strengths substantiating with GATE rank and your desire to do M.Tech in the respective IIT. Request them to give you a chance so that you can prove yourself. Some professors would encourage the students who are seriously interested, inspite of the above negative point, if the GATE score is good and the student has a burning desire to join the desired specialization in the desired IIT. They may consider your application with sympathy and may give you a chance after a personnel Interview. Some of our old students with second class in their graduation got admission on similar grounds. Be bold and be positive. Definitely, you can reach your goal.
    Note:
Those who have got relatively low percentiles in the GATE, are strongly advised to apply for more number of colleges (not less than 10) so that they can get admission in at least one college in the desired specialization. The students can decide later, to join the appropriate college.
The students shall be in-touch with the daily English newspapers (The Hindu, The Indian Express, The Times of India etc.) and Employment News for the M.Tech notifications by various colleges.
All the above guidelines are only suggestive / advisory. The candidates are requested to go through the information brochure of each college and take decision appropriately, depending upon their interest.
The students may also contact their seniors/friends studying in various colleges for their suggestions and latest information about the colleges.
